Jump For the Fallen – 183 Skydivers Set To Break World Record and Honour Fallen Soldiers.

New Forest charity Pilgrim Bandits, which supports amputee service men and women, has recruited 183 tandem skydivers to take part in a world record attempt tandem skydive event tomorrow at Netheravon, Wiltshire.  Also jumping are amputee and injured servicemen; Ben Parkinson, Jake Bartlett, Ricky Ferguson, and Paul Jacobs.

The New Forest based charity invited anyone with a brave heart to take part in the Pilgrim Bandit’s Skydive challenge being held during the Jump For The Fallen week.

Jump For The Fallen is a week-long event hosted by the Army Parachute Association, based at Netheravon.  Over the week the aim is to have secured a sponsored-for-charity  tandem jumper for every soldier (430 to date) lost in action in Afghanistan since the start of the conflict, thereby raising valuable funds for the military charities associated with the week.

Pilgrim Bandits provide full details and information on the event at

Pictured:  John Sandford Hart from Christchurch (right) and Lance Bdr Ben Parkinson (front) who is a double amputee and is defying medical science to talk, walk and complete extraordinary physical challenges with Pilgrim Bandits after an anti-tank mine blew up the vehicle he was travelling in Helmand Province in 2006.  Ben sustained a catalogue of  40 horrendous injuries including brain damage and loss of both legs above the knee.

Head of media for the charity Deborah Risbridger, also jumping said “We are so excited to have got 183 people to register to jump.  The money we raise will allow as to take more amputees on confidence building expeditions if we make it into the Guinness Book of World Records that will be a wonderful bonus – I’m terrified!  ”

Craggy Island Indoor Climbing Centre Unveils New 10 Metre Stack

£100k Investment Crowns Guildford Climbing Centre

The UK’s very first dry-tooling climbing wall plus new freestanding stack form part of major investment by indoor climbing company.

Craggy Island, the South East’s premiere indoor climbing centres (at Guildford and Sutton) has completed a first-phase £100k improvement to its Guildford climbing facilities with developments planned for the Sutton centre too.

Recognised as London and SE’s top climbing centres by professional and amateur climbers alike, Craggy Island Guildford, now boasts an impressive 15 metre ‘stack’ (shown here).   The Stack, is a freestanding climbing column featuring a range of routes to suit all abilities.  Danie Rushmere, general manager for both Craggy Island centres explains. “The Stack is designed to replicate a sea-stack (a freestanding rock face found in coastal locations worldwide and favoured by climbers) and offers a new degree of interest and complexity for our customers.”

Craggy Island, sponsors of World No3 Climber, Shauna Coxsey, has also developed the UK’s very first indoor dry tooling wall. Designed to replicate the experience of climbing with ice axes.

Further developments at the centre include two additional climbing walls, refurbishment of the café environment and stunning glacier mural added to the children’s climbing wall.

Joint managing director Rob Mitchell, “Craggy has built a rock solid reputation as the high quality and great fun climbing venue.  World Champion Mark Croxall, who sets routes exclusively for Craggy Island, creates arduous but compelling route options for climbers of all abilities.  Our frequent route-changes or ‘settings’ are well-respected within the climbing community and we attract climbers from all over the country.  But, to keep our edge we must continually invest in proven technology, and champion industry-firsts like the Petzl dry-tool wall. Indoor climbing is growing rapidly across the UK. I believe one reason for this is that absolutely anyone interested in any type of physical activity be it; competitive sport, dance, martial arts or just keeping-in-shape is being drawn by the way indoor climbing speedily builds strength, muscle tone, core-strength and flexibility. We see many personal trainers and their clients here achieving amazing results.”

Craggy Island now offers over 100 rope lines along with bouldering walls (low level climbing without ropes).  The Company has been in Guildford for 8 years and has encouraged children from as young as 5 years to take part through kids clubs and taster sessions.  With climbing set to join the Olympic line-up for 2020 the British Olympians of the future may well have got their start at Craggy Island.

A New Forest charity is one step closer to winning a house thanks to a national housebuilder.

New Milton based charity, Pilgrim Bandits, has been announced as one of Persimmon Homes’ 24 finalists who will all go in a public vote to try and win a brand new house worth up to £250,000.

The Pilgrim Bandits raise funds through challenges to support ex-serviceman and amputees. The group organises fundraising – and confidence-boosting – endurance and adrenaline adventures for members of the public and injured ex-servicemen.

Deborah Risbridger at Pilgrim Bandits, said: “We’re thrilled to be in the final twenty four and hope all of Hampshire votes for us to try and help us win the house.

“Pilgrim Bandits supports, with no sympathy, amputee service men and women by providing physically and mentally demanding expeditions. Members of the public are invited along as paying guest challengers to raise funds for the charity and to gain life-enhancing insight from these remarkable individuals.

“Recent examples have included; climbing Kilimanjaro, trekking across the Sahara, skydiving in Dubai, recreating the SAS Selection Challenge.  Imagine doing any of these but without both legs!

“These brave and highly trained individuals are then encouraged to work with schools and youth centres to inspire children and young people.”

The Pilgrim Bandits was selected ahead of 31 other charities to be the representative for Persimmon Homes South Coast region, and it will now go forward to compete against the housebuilder’s 23 other regions charities across England, Scotland and Wales.

The winner will be announced at a special birthday luncheon at the Kensington Roof Gardens on 27 September 2012.

The Pilgrim Bandits has already benefited from making the final, as all the finalists will receive a cash donation of £6,000 from Persimmon. The overall winner will win a brand new three bedroom detached house with garage valued at £250,000.

Rob Allen, sales director of Persimmon Homes South Coast, said:  “In total Persimmon Homes had over 3,500 nominations for the competition.

“We’re now calling on the general public to cast a vote on our website – – it would be a fantastic boost to a great charity, if Pilgrim Bandits was to win.”

Persimmon Homes was founded in 1972 by current life president Duncan Davison and has grown to be one of the largest and most successful housebuilder’s in the UK over the last 40 years.
